Complete list of Africa's oldest presidents, age and country
President Bola Tinubu is currently one of Africa's oldest presidents.
Naija News reported that Tinubu celebrated his 72nd birthday on March 29.
Recall that Senegal's President Bashir Diomai Fay, 44, took office on Tuesday, April 2, and is currently the youngest president this continent has ever produced.
There are other countries in Africa that have had presidents in their 50s and 60s.
However, there are countries, including Nigeria, where leaders belong to older generations. In addition to Nigeria's President Tinubu, there are approximately 14 other African countries whose presidents will be over 70 years old as of March 2024, according to Statisense.
These African presidents are:
Paul Biya, 91: Cameroon's president is currently 91 years old, making him the oldest person in Africa.
He is his second president of the West African country, and since he has been in power since 1982, no president has come after him.
In 1979, Cameroon introduced a new law appointing the prime minister as the constitutional successor to the president.
President Ahidjo suddenly resigned on November 4, 1982, and Biya became the constitutional successor. He took office on November 6 of the same year and has been regularly re-elected ever since.
Alassane Dramane Ouattara, 82, has been president of Ivory Coast for 13 years and is the second oldest president on the African continent. He was first elected in 2010 and was re-elected for second and third terms.
Ouattara's candidacy was controversial when he announced plans to run for a third term.
However, the Constitutional Court ruled that his first term was based on a separate constitution and would not count towards the new constitution. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, 81, is the current president of Equatorial Guinea and has been in power since August 3, 1979.
Mbasogo will be the second president of the Gulf state since its independence.
The Equatorial Guinean politician and military veteran is the world's second-longest serving president after Cameroon's Paul Biya.
Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, 81: He is the President of Zimbabwe who took office on 24 November 2017.
He was a longtime ally and vice president of Robert Mugabe. After Mugabe was removed from office, Mnangagwa became president.
Nana Akufo-Addo, 80: President of Ghana in 2017 and served as the country's attorney general from 2001 to 2001.
He also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007 under the government led by Kufuor.
